Every airport has its own type of books. Entebbe airport did not disappoint. At the end of June, this book jumped out at me. I did not disappoint.  I bought the book because it forced me to pause and look inside of me: “Underneath our designer clothes, makeup, jewelry, and photo filters are cracks left by abuse, mistakes, rejection, and disappointment.”

After two months of reading and reflection, I decided that my favourite paragraph is the one below:

“They said I was good, but they never let me play.
They applauded my commitment, but they never let me play.
They said I was talented, but they never let me play.
They said I had potential, but they never let me play.
I did not realise it then, but their rejection was a domain of enormous pain-in other words, damage.
…Not everything that appears good about your personality comes from a good place. If you are like me, your motivation may be rooted in rejection. Someone else’s may be rooted in neglect. But it’s imperative for each of us to discover the root of our motivation, because our fruit is always connected to our root. We need to discover what drives us.” (49)

Read the book and have a conversation with yourself.  What drives you?
