Former president Thabo Mbeki, Patron of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation delivering his welcome statement at the 2nd Cape Town Conversations, gave direction to the questions that need to be addressed:
1. What are the challenges of the global south?
2. What are the aspirations of the global south?
3. How will these aspirations be addressed?
4. What is to be done?
He noted that these discussions are occurring within the context of a global system that is not keen to address aspirations of the global south.
He challenged participants to come up with ideas that should be shared with citizens of the global south and internationally.
