Today I had the pleasure of attending the virtual launch of the Report of the High-Level Panel of Experts on Africa and the Reform of the Multilateral System: The Summit of the Future and Beyond. Amani Africa and Namibia, through the Vice President of the Republic H.E Dr. Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, constituted and led a high-level process on “Africa and the reform of the Multilateral System”. The Panel consisted of leading African experts, policy practitioners, and diplomats to provide relevant data and analysis as a solid foundation for enabling the AU Member States to achieve a common position in their negotiation in various forums concerning the reform of the multilateral system.
As a member of the Panel, I am grateful to Amani Africa ET, Solomon Ayele Dersso, and the Republic of Namibia, and my colleague Panel members for the shared opportunity to bring this process to a successful end.
The Panel met several times, in Windhoek, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa. It identified principles that should guide African efforts in reforming the multilateral system. The Panel’s analysis and recommendations on four key areas for reform, these being:
• Reform of the UN Security Council
• Global Financial Architecture
• Digital Architecture
• Climate Change
During the launch of the Report, H.E. Vice President Ndaitwah highlighted the fact that: “Reform of the multilateral system is a strategic imperative, rather than a policy choice, both for Africa and the rest of the world.”

AU Member States and Stakeholders are encouraged to reflect on the Panel’s recommendations as preparations for the Summit of the Future progress.
